Hue, Hoi An and Central Vietnam
Huế is Central Vietnam’s old imperial capital – founded by the Nguyen dynasty who ruled the country from the walled Purple City that still lies at modern Huế’s heart. A massive fortified gate leads through to a throne room guarded by sombre statues where the emperor would formally greet visitors. The Forbidden city lies beyond – via a long, blood-red corridor topped with a procession of decorated wooden gables which led to a distant door and pavilions whose plunging terracotta roofs are topped with swirling dragons and fronted by cauldrons of burning incense. The countryside around is littered with gorgeous temple tombs.
A little to the south is the delightful arty town of Hoi An; spread along a river next to white sand beaches of the South China Sea and replete with gorgeous Portuguese and Japanese style terracotta roofed houses. Dotting the surrounding countryside are ancient Champa temples, lost in the forest.
