Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta

Saigon – or Ho Chi Minh City is urban Vietnam at its most exciting and stylish. Alongside traditional flower markets – brilliant with orchids and sweet-smelling frangipani and pagodas like Xa Loi pagoda (said to house a relic of the Buddha), are shimmering skyscrapers, reflected in the Saigon river, modish cocktail bars and gorgeous French colonial buildings, many of them lovingly restored. Nowhere in South East Asia has a more energetic buzz and the nightlife and restaurant scene are captivating. Nearby are the Cu Chi tunnels  – an underground maze drilled under rice fields and roads, where the Viet Cong hid from the Americans before re-taking Saigon in 1975.

In the far south the mighty Mekong drains into the ocean in a filigree of rivers spread like fingers over a delta, where villagers still trade at floating markets and the people are as Khmer and Cham as they are Vietnamese.

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is Vietnam’s largest and most dynamic metropolis, characterized by a blend of modern skyscrapers and historical landmarks. The city is bustling with energy, featuring lively streets, a thriving nightlife scene, and numerous attractions such as the War Remnants Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the iconic Ben Thanh Market. It’s a cultural melting pot where history meets modernity, with diverse food options, shopping districts, and a blend of colonial and contemporary architecture. In stark contrast, the Mekong Delta offers a serene, rural escape, where the pace of life slows down significantly. Located in the southern part of Vietnam, the delta is a vast network of rivers, canals, and lush landscapes that provide a unique insight into the traditional rural way of life. Visitors can explore floating markets, such as the famous Cai Rang Market, take boat tours along winding rivers, and visit charming villages surrounded by rice paddies and orchards. The Mekong Delta is a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility, nature, and an authentic glimpse of Vietnamese countryside life, offering a peaceful contrast to the urban excitement of Ho Chi Minh City.
