Covering an area of 66 square kilometers, these rice fields carve into the mountainsides, creating a spectacular landscape often referred to as the ‘Dragon’s Backbone’ due to its resemblance to dragon ribs. From the highest viewpoints, you’ll witness an awe-inspiring panorama of lush, terraced fields cascading down the slopes.
Arriving at Ping’an Zhuang Village, home to over 50 families of the Zhuang ethnic minority, you will experience local traditions and hospitality. Nestled between 300 to 1,100 meters above sea level, the village offers stunning views of the surrounding terraces. To reach the best viewpoints, take an electric car ride up the mountain and hike for approximately 30 minutes. For those seeking more adventure, a one-hour hike up the mountain is also an option. After soaking in the stunning landscapes, descend back into the village for a well-deserved meal.
Continue the experience by learning how to make bamboo-tube rice with a local minority family. This dish is a regional specialty made by filling bamboo with rice, meat, and seasonings before roasting it over an open flame. You’ll get hands-on experience preparing the dish and learn more about the culinary traditions of the region while chatting with your hosts and exploring their traditional wooden home.
For those who love hiking, venture on a 1.5-hour trek from Ping’an Village to Ancient Zhuang Village, a lesser-visited but equally enchanting settlement. Unlike the bustling Ping’an Village, Ancient Zhuang Village remains quiet and untouched by mass tourism. Its residents, belonging to the Baiyi Zhuang (White Clothes Zhuang) ethnic group, preserve their centuries-old way of life, living in traditional wooden houses and wearing distinctive white garments.
To complete your experience, enjoy a meal at one of Longsheng’s popular local restaurants, where your guide will recommend the best options based on your preferences. Some regional specialties include bamboo-tube cooked rice, sautéed wild vegetables, smoked pork, and fresh mountain mushrooms.
