Day 9 – El Calafate

Today we will get to know the main highlight of the trip: Perito Moreno Glacier. The Glacier is located inside Los Glaciares National Park. This park has been declared as Mankind Heritage by UNESCO. Those glaciers that named it (about 47) show us a 10 thousand-year-old world: cold and wild. The most famous one is Perito Moreno Glacier in the southwestern end of Argentino Lake at 80 km away from El Calafate. This glacier is so-called due to a great Argentinian explorer from last century and is one of the few glaciers that is still moving in the world. That is why it has become one of the most spectacular natural shows in South America. From time to time its 60-m-high snout releases some ice walls as huge as buildings that fall into Rico Bend or Canal de los Témpanos (Ice floes Channel) and then they continue sailing along the channel to the main area of the lake. However, that is not all. The glacier, while moving forward, comes closer to the Magallanes Peninsula, in the opposite lake bank as well as footbridge and viewpoint area. This cycle takes from 4 to 6 years and it eventually separates the lake into two areas. Rico Bend is dammed up and it increases about 35 m over its average level. Its water slowly pierces its way through the glacier snout until it makes it fall down. This show is breathtaking. A navigation in order to get even closer to the glacier is included. Then at the end of the visit return to El Calafate city and drop off at your hotel. Evening at your leisure.

Day 15: Buenos Aires

Enjoy a morning city tour commencing in the historic Plaza de Mayo, the site of the 1810 revolution and now a hub of political life. From here you will see the Casa Rosada government palace and its famous balcony where Eva Peron used to address the people. Continue to the picturesque and colourful neighbourhood of La Boca with its famous street ‘Caminito’ whose architecture reflects the European influence of the late 19th century. In the evening marvel at a traditional tango, show whilst enjoying dinner. Tango originated in the 1880 ghettos which were populated by Italian and Spanish immigrants, Africans and Gauchos. From this intersection rose the ‘Comrpraditos’, whose songs, lyrics, and dances reflect ‘el duelo de cuchilleros’, or knife fights characteristic of the social ambience. The tango rose from a mix of Cuban and Spanish rhythms, some polka, and according to some, also a bit of African music.

Day 16: Buenos Aires

Today we will pick you up early in the morning to drive to San Antonio de Areco Gaucho town. Once there we will visit the main square and attractives and then head to a local Estancia to enjoy a BBQ Lunch. Arriving at the “cradle of tradition” you shall experience the great contrast between the hectic metropolis you just left and the quiet charm of another Argentina, that of the gauchos. Proud of its authenticity and old time ways, this friendly town has a tangible sense of history and heritage. Welcome to San Antonio de Areco! Charged with symbolism, the silver pieces that gauchos wear and treasure, reflect not only their heritage and status but also their philosophy. Our town thrives on a reputation built through generations by its artisans, their skill, artistry, and respect for traditions. With us you will have access to the best. You will learn about the gauchos. Origin of the argentinian economic development, these Estancias produced the funds for the country´s flourishing. Family owned and operated, this historical cattle ranch has managed to open its gates to visitors without losing its cows, authenticity, love for horses, vegetation and the way of the gauchos.
There are over 70 horses at the property, mostly “criollos” which means that, no matter how well acquainted you are with these animals, or if this is your first time amongst them, you will be able to have a close encounter; riding gaucho style, getting a tour of the grounds from a carriage, or simply petting them. The moment you open your nostrils to the stories the breeze is telling, you will know that you made the right choice. In the pastoral setting of the Estancia, and grilled slowly over wood, the traditional free-range beef, grants the opportunity to feel and be filled like a true argentino! Chances are you will be returning to Buenos Aires with a deeper understanding of Argentina, its idiosyncrasy, customs, history and the warmth of its people… or that you will have the biggest siesta on your way back digesting all the beef you ate and all the wine! At the end of the tour transfer back to the city and drop off at the hotel.

Of course, no trip would be complete without a visit to the Sambadrome, the quintessential 1,870 ft long, samba venue where the famous Rio Carnival parade is held every year.
