Colca Canyon – Peru

Colca Canyon, located in southern Peru, is one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching depths of up to 3,270 metres—twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The canyon is known for its dramatic landscapes, featuring terraced fields that have been cultivated since pre-Incan times, as well as volcanic peaks and crystal-clear rivers. Colca Canyon is also a prime spot for birdwatching, particularly for the Andean condor, a bird with the largest wingspan of any land bird, measuring up to 3.3 metres. Visitors often head to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint to witness the soaring condors in their natural habitat. Adventurers can trek through the canyon to reach the Oasis of Sangalle, where they can relax in natural hot springs and enjoy the tranquility of the canyon. Colca Canyon is also home to several charming villages, such as Chivay, where visitors can experience traditional Andean culture and cuisine.

Fun Fact:
The Andean condor, often seen gliding through the canyon, is revered by the indigenous people of the region, who see it as a symbol of strength and freedom. The bird’s wingspan can reach over 3 metres, making it one of the largest flying birds in the world.
