Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Experience a Guided Day or Night Walk
Visit the Analamazaotra Special Reserve (Périnet) in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park to spot and hear the sounds of the Indri Lemurs. The Indri is the largest living lemur and known as babakotos in the local Malagasy language, which means ‘man of the forest’ or ‘little father’ and unlike other lemurs, they only have a short stumpy tail. Indri’s produce loud territorial calls that can be heard from over 1km away as you enter the park. Video Clip
Trek through beautiful waterfalls and landscape that lead you towards a natural swimming pool with a cascading waterfall. Bathing is allowed so bring your swimsuits. Along the track there is an exceptional rainforest ambiance where you can generally hear the screams of the Indri and see some beautiful orchids. There are many circuits to choose from depending on your fitness level. The easiest trekking with well paved paths can take from 2-3 hours with a distance of up to 3 kilometres.
Enjoy a guided night walk through the Analamazaotra Park to spot the nocturnal animals including the Goodman’s mouse lemur. Experience the rainforest after dark where nocturnal lemurs, chameleons, geckos, frogs and fireflies come alive. The night walk can take 1½ – 2 hours.
Answer the Call of the Wild: Your Madagascar Adventure Awaits in Andasibe-Mantadia
Listen closely. Before you even step foot into this emerald sanctuary, the forest announces itself with a sound unlike any other on Earth. It is the haunting, siren-like song of the Indri.
This is the sound of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, the most accessible and rewarding rainforest jewel in eastern Madagascar, and your portal to a world of truly unique evolutionary wonder.
Where the Largest Lemur Sings to the Sunrise
Forget everything you think you know about a safari. In Andasibe-Mantadia, the magic begins not with a roar, but with a mournful, melodic wail. The park is the prime stronghold of the Indri, the largest living lemur, an iconic black and white primate with an upright, teddy-bear-like posture and a virtually non-existent tail.
Waking before dawn for a morning trek is an absolute must. As the sun streaks through the towering canopy, you’ll be guided through the misty forest to witness these incredible creatures leaping effortlessly through the trees. They are famously monogamous, mate for life, and revered by the local Malagasy people as the ‘Babakoto’ or ‘ancestor of man.’ To see them sit in the classic “sun-worshipping” posture, legs crossed and arms wide to the morning light, is a humbling and unforgettable sight.
Adventure by Day, Magic by Night
Andasibe-Mantadia is not just a place to observe; it’s a place to immerse yourself in an ancient, living ecosystem.
- Daytime Treks for Every Explorer: The park is split into two distinct areas. The Analamazaotra Reserve offers well-maintained paths for easier trekking and almost guaranteed Indri sightings. For the more adventurous, the wilder Mantadia National Park offers rugged, primary forest trails where you can hunt for the stunning Diademed Sifaka or the elusive Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur. Marvel at giant tree ferns, delicate orchids (especially in bloom from October to December), and cascading waterfalls.
- The World After Dark: The rainforest takes on a whole new persona when the sun sets. On our guided Night Walks just outside the park boundary, your torchlight will illuminate a world invisible by day. See tiny, bright-eyed Mouse Lemurs darting between branches, and spot a kaleidoscopic array of reptiles and amphibians. Look closely for the massive, magnificent Parson’s Chameleon, one of the largest in the world, shifting its colours right before your eyes.
