Day 5: Guilin to Longsheng

Longsheng Rice Terraces (2h drive each way)

Today, travel to Longsheng to explore the stunning Longji Rice Terraces. You’ll learn how to make bamboo-tube rice with a local family and visit a minority village, where you can witness traditional customs and architecture. After a scenic hike from Ping’an Village to Ancient Zhuang Village, return to Guilin in the evening.

Details:

Today, embark on a scenic journey to the breathtaking Longji Rice Terraces, a marvel of ancient engineering that has been cultivated for over 600 years. Covering an area of 66 square kilometers, these rice fields carve into the mountainsides, creating a spectacular landscape often referred to as the ‘Dragon’s Backbone’ due to its resemblance to dragon ribs. From the highest viewpoints, you’ll witness an awe-inspiring panorama of lush, terraced fields cascading down the slopes.

Arriving at Ping’an Zhuang Village, home to over 50 families of the Zhuang ethnic minority, you will experience local traditions and hospitality. Nestled between 300 to 1,100 meters above sea level, the village offers stunning views of the surrounding terraces. To reach the best viewpoints, take an electric car ride up the mountain and hike for approximately 30 minutes. For those seeking more adventure, a one-hour hike up the mountain is also an option. After soaking in the stunning landscapes, descend back into the village for a well-deserved meal.

Continue the experience by learning how to make bamboo-tube rice with a local minority family. This dish is a regional specialty made by filling bamboo with rice, meat, and seasonings before roasting it over an open flame. You’ll get hands-on experience preparing the dish and learn more about the culinary traditions of the region while chatting with your hosts and exploring their traditional wooden home.

For those who love hiking, venture on a 1.5-hour trek from Ping’an Village to Ancient Zhuang Village, a lesser-visited but equally enchanting settlement. Unlike the bustling Ping’an Village, Ancient Zhuang Village remains quiet and untouched by mass tourism. Its residents, belonging to the Baiyi Zhuang (White Clothes Zhuang) ethnic group, preserve their centuries-old way of life, living in traditional wooden houses and wearing distinctive white garments.

To complete your experience, enjoy a meal at one of Longsheng’s popular local restaurants, where your guide will recommend the best options based on your preferences. Some regional specialties include bamboo-tube cooked rice, sautéed wild vegetables, smoked pork, and fresh mountain mushrooms.

Notes:

  1. During peak seasons (July, August, Chinese New Year, and National Day holidays), there may be long queues for the cable car to Glacier Park. If you’re not particularly eager to visit the high-altitude snow world, you can opt for the less crowded Spruce Meadow (at 3,300 meters / 10,800 feet) or Yak Meadow, which is slightly farther from Lijiang but offers beautiful forest and meadow scenery with snow-capped peaks in the background. Both meadows are accessible by cable car.
  2. Typically, Glacier Park experiences the least snow in July and August and the most snow in March. The cable car to Glacier Park may be closed due to high winds, particularly between December and February.

Tips:

  1. The quality of restaurants in the snow mountain area may be lower than in the city. It’s recommended to have a meal in town before heading to the mountain or bring packed lunches.
  2. People with serious heart conditions should avoid visiting the mountain. Those with less severe heart problems or high/low blood pressure should consult a doctor before traveling.
  3. Bring warm clothing, as temperatures on top of the mountain can drop to 5°C (41°F).
  4. During peak season (April to June), expect a wait of 30-90 minutes for the shuttle bus and another 20-60 minutes for the cable car.

Learn to Cook Naxi Dishes with Locals (2 hours):
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture of the Naxi people is by visiting their homes and learning to cook traditional Naxi dishes. The park preserves a rich and pristine ecosystem, featuring virgin forests and diverse wildlife. Among the park’s must-see attractions is Lake Shudu, one of the largest freshwater lakes on the Diqing Plateau. Surrounded by forests of fir, spruce, and silver birch, the lake is home to various wild animals, including bears, golden cats, deer, and pheasants. You will also visit Bita Lake, known as the “pearl of the plateau” by the Tibetan people, where the waters remain crystal-clear year-round.

While many tourists visit Songzanlin Monastery, few get the opportunity to experience a Tibetan ceremony of blessing on the hill behind it. This area is where local Tibetans come to pray. After touring the monastery, you’ll walk to the rear, where you may witness Tibetans walking around the monastery, chanting, and using prayer beads. As you ascend the small hill behind the monastery, you’ll be rewarded with a different and beautiful view of the structure. Along the way, you might encounter a Tibetan woman collecting cow dung for manure or a lama heading to pray.
At the top of the hill, where the pagoda with prayer flags stands, your guide will teach you how to perform the “Weisang” ceremony, which involves burning pine branches, believed to please the god of the mountain. You will also have the chance to tie a prayer flag to the pagoda and make a prayer towards Songzanlin Monastery.
Note: If you prefer not to participate in the religious ceremony, you are welcome to simply observe, ask questions, and listen to your guide’s explanations. There are also non-religious activities available if preferred. We are happy to tailor the experience to meet your interests and respect both your beliefs and those of the local community.

The palace is a vast and awe-inspiring maze of corridors, stairs, rooms filled with richly decorated statues, tombs, murals, and priceless antiques.

  4. Visitors should respect the rules and avoid wearing hats, revealing clothing, or stepping on thresholds.

Visit Chengdu’s famous Kuan-zhai Lane, then spend the afternoon at a local park, experiencing the relaxed lifestyle of the city.

Details:

Chengdu Kuan-zhai Lane:
Kuan-zhai Lane, which translates to “Wide and Narrow Alley” in Chinese, is a restored area of old Chengdu that offers a glimpse into the city’s traditional lifestyle. This charming lane features a blend of Western-style cafes, take-out options, art galleries, and local eateries. It’s a perfect place to explore Chengdu’s historic atmosphere while enjoying modern amenities. Stroll through the narrow alleys, shop for unique goods, and sample the flavors of the area in a vibrant setting.

Be a Half-Day Chengduer in a Local Park (2 hours):
Chengdu is known as one of the most laid-back cities in China, and here you’ll get a chance to embrace the relaxed local lifestyle. Take a seat in a tranquil park and sip on a cup of traditional tea. Your guide will explain the tea-drinking etiquette, from the symbolic meanings of where you place the lid, bowl, and tray. Experience a local favorite activity: square dancing. It’s an essential part of Chengdu’s daily life, and you can join in with a variety of dances, from line dancing to waltzing or even some Chinese salsa if you’re feeling adventurous.
You’ll also witness some unique scenes that are a part of everyday life in Chengdu: parents searching for potential spouses for their unmarried children in the marriage market, locals enjoying traditional ear massages in teahouses, or playing mahjong on the streets and even by the river during summer. It’s a fun, lively, and truly Chengdu experience.

Popular Local Restaurants with Authentic Sichuan Food:
For lunch or dinner, we will arrange for you to dine at one of the best local restaurants serving authentic Sichuan cuisine. Your tour guide will recommend places based on your tastes and itinerary.
